So I did do a search, but I'm looking for either direct experience or something close to it.
-Squier VM 70's J-bass with DiMarzio Model J's wired in series
- Ibanez SRX3EXQM1 with Nordstrand NTMB3 preamp w/ mid switch
-Traynor YBA200 and Kasino 2x15's w/ Eminence Legend speakers
-Carvin BX500 into Avatar Neo 2x10s
Love the sound of my gear, but the direction my band is going in now is much funkier and groove-oriented than what we went in with initially (grunge rock). We're moving into a more RHCP, 311, Primus, and RATM type sound and I want to handle my overall tone a different way. I've always been an amp tweaking kind of guy, but I'm leaning towards a flat or more neutral EQ setting on the amp and adjusting the EQ on my bass since I'll be doing slap/pop and fingerstyle on and off. An EQ pedal would sort of work, but my Ibanez and Jazz have different "slap tones" and I want it shine through in its own way when I pick up either bass.
So based on the way my jazz is set up, I'm kicking around an Audere jazz preamp (pro-jz3) and I'm wondering if anyone has some experience with that setup? I'm using classic (pre-d'addario) fender SS strings in .045-.105 gauge. I love the tone of my jazz, but the highs can be a little over the top at times and I'd like to trim the mids some when I'm slapping. Just looking for more control to make sure the tone matches the part of the song correctly and do it on the fly. I like the price point for the audere as well (and ease of install).
Are they pretty transparent? Any positives or negatives people can share?
EDIT: Also, how does the Z-mode switch work out for you? Get in the way or is it pretty useful?
