I'm not really a big fan of soloing the bridge pickup.. so I can't really give a worthwhile evaluation of the pickup on it's own.. but combined with my other pickup (a Dimarzio Model P) the sound is quite nice. It cuts through the mix well and the tone seems to have a lot of body. The slap tone isn't the greatest but it gets the job done (a whole lot better sounding than a P by itself).
(note: my model J soloed might be more to my liking if it was closer to standard position.. I placed mine a bit closer to the bridge than is normal.. not by a huge amount, but it is visibly noticeable.... I still think it's a decent soloed bridge p/u tone.. I just don't have much use for it. With this bass I run both pickups on full almost all the time)
The Model J also doesn't hum and the adjustable (hex screw) pole pieces are pretty convenient.
You might be able to get a cheap set on ebay. I got my single J for 10 bucks on ebay.

I think you made a really good choice in trying them. I have model J's in a MIM and in my Geddy Lee... I have never had any problem with any of them, I seem to always find a tone I like, and they don't seem to have any weird quirks about them. I think they are pretty solid, and can do the job in a lot of settings. And they are super quiet! I think that a 3rd set of them will ahve to go into my MIA jazz to replace the Bartolinis that are in there now...

According to DiMarzio, Model J has 4,5,6 for {treble, mid, bass} output, whereas UltraJazz has 6,5,7.
When I was thinking about this, the Model J's seemed as though they would be thumpier than I wanted, and I've been pleased with the UltraJazz. I was doing a fretless though, so I specifically did not want to destroy too much clarity. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
