Dimarzio pups in a fretless jazz and P?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking of putting some Dimarzio pups in my fretless jazz and P Basses. I find the stock pick ups a little thin and I'm looking for something a little more aggressive.

I've read good reviews of the Model J and Ultra Jazz and I'm leaning more towards the Model Js at the moment in the Jazz. Also thinking the Model P in the Fretless Precision.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on these pups and how you think they would work with a fretless.

Thanks

Gazz

I would do ultra J pickups in the Jazz and a "Will Power" Middle in the P

I don't know what model, but Tony franklin uses a DiMarzio Jazz pup in his original fretless P. I don't know which model though, its an old DiMarzio

I just put a set of Ultra Jazz pups in my jazz and so far I'm impressed. They've really brought the bass (and my amp) to life. A nice clear punchy tone without all the hiss, buzz, farts and clicks of the Fender mock vintage pups. These things are very quiet noise wise. Not exactly vintage but not too modern sounding ether. My tone knob actually does something now too!! I did a bit of recording with them today and they sounded great. Not tried em with the band yet but I don't see any problem. Don't be fooled by the price these are very good pups. Much better then the fenders.

I'm gonna do the P bass next month with a model PJ set.

Based on what I've gathered regarding the Model J and the Ultra Jazz, I would think the Model J might be too muddy. I would likely opt for the greater clarity of the Ultra Jazz (more clarity = more mwah). Your taste may be different...
