DiMarzio question

Sign in to disble this ad
I was wondering about the DiMarzio DP120 "Model One" pickups.

I've actually been planning for a long time to buy two of them and have a dual humbucker bass, maybe getting a cheap SX Jazz/P bass body to drop them in.

Would this work well? I've heard the only time people use this pickup with another one is when they want stereo output for a Sheehan-like tone.

Here's the pickup I'm talking about, if you don't know.

The major problem with dual humbuckers is that the pole pieces won't line up anywhere near the strings as you move back toward the bridge. The space between the poles is narrower than on something like an MM pup.

unless you get the sheehan version of it - it has the wider fender style spacing. So it should be pretty close.

i did just that years ago, routing a perfectly nice EB-O and putting that dimarzio in the bridge. sounded like absolute dog-cr*p.

i should never have done it, but looking back, it might have been tolerable had i put in the middle instead.

I have a Model One in the neck position of my P Bass but unlike Sheehan I have mine wired into the existing harness since I don't bi-amp. It's at home there. However it will not be ideal in the bridge position because, as someone already noted, the pole spacing won't match up to the strings prefectly. However I have used the Model One at the bridge on several projects that had the typical 19mm string spacing and the pickup still sounded nice. It definitely had the modern jazz/fusion bark (or fart, depending on the individual) to it.

Hi.

I installed one () in the neck position of an Epiphone Thunderbird.

Right at home there and with a flick of a switch and a turn of a knob I can get close to a (EPI) EB-0, EB-3 and Thunderbird in one bass.

Regards
Sam
