dimarzio or seymore duncan for metal

Sign in to disble this ad
not too long ago talk bass helped me decide on buying a vintage modified jazz bass, which was indeed a great decision. i want to change the pick ups for something a little more metal (RATMish maybe) there's been a lot of threads on dimarzio dp123s for metal but not many on seymore dunacn sjb3 Quarter pounders. to put it simply which one do you think you'd choose?

The dimarzio. But really Id go with a P pup or soapbar pup bass rather then a J for metal.

It's what he uses...into 3 amps and 6 separate signals

They're both good pickups for that kind of tone...I have basses with both and they both kick distortion in the ass.

I'd go with the DiMarzio Model J personally.

Since you'll be upgrading pickups you might as well do the pots, caps, and jack while you're at it. The parts are cheap enough, and some quality CTS pots will be a step up from the stock stuff.

Jazz yes, but not vintage. He rewinds all his pickups himself.

The first album was a MM bass.

I recommend leaving the pots alone. They're not CTS but they're fine.

that's probably what i'll do till i've more experience with modding and stuff.

i feel like bringing the dimarzio ultra jazzes into this equation.

I wouldn't. I have an Ultrajazz on the bridge position of my modded P and it's voiced more vintagey and less aggressive than the Model J. Good for that bass, but I'm not looking for rage on that bass.

+1 for Model J versus other Dimarzio jazz pickups. It's got series/parallel wiring options on coils and always seemed to me a Jazz with a good dose of New York punk attitude. Same for their model P too only Precision with said attiutude. Also, as a strange aside, a pair works great for an 8 string bass. Their pricing is competitive and IIRC the installation instructions are fairly good too.

i agree, i would not use the ultrajazz. too smooth. not very aggressive. my pick would be the model j's. the 1/4ers are good but do not have enough attack for me in harder types of music.

I use the DP126 P/J pickups in my Ibanez and I have been very happy with them. DiMarzio is a great choice. IME they are a hot pickup with a great deal of clarity.

That's true. They're rolled off on the top end. I like it, though I'm considering a swap to EMG's because I like the high end more prominent.
