I use them in combination with a J. They retain the classic P sound with good clarity, even in the low end. Crisp highs, too.

I've always liked the Dimarzio brand. Very consistent and really nice sounding. I've typically used the Ultras for the basses my brother and I make. But I'm actually building a concept bass featuring 2 Dimarzio Will Powers. I think it'll sound great. Jazz

Mate go on Dimarzios Website http://www.dimarzio.com/site/#/pickups/ and check out the Dimarzio Split P, there should be a soundclip there, and the guy plays slap

DiMarzio Split P

I installed the Split P in a MIM Precision Bass that I bought at a pawn shop and rewired and upgraded it and the response from this pickup is amazing.

Some folks suggest 500K Ohm pots but I used 250K CTS pots with a 0.047uF capacitor and a set of flatwound strings and it sounds as good (or better than) as many MIA Fender basses.

I put one in for about a month, I tried out a few P pickups over a 4 month span. I kept a Delano P w/large pole pieces, I sold the Split P to someone on this forum saying that I know I will own one again someday. I saw that he sold it about a month later, I didn't ask why. I used 500K pots so there was more hi-end retention, I used steel roundwound strings. It sounded great, with lots of low-mid punch, I know I will install one again.
