Dimarzio ultra jazz and liny fralin single coil

Dimarzio ultra jazz and liny fralin single coil both sound similar and kind of have that marcus tone when slapped.
I'm just wondering if they are always harsh even with finger style on a bass with no preamp?
Thanks

I didn't think the two pickups were very similar from what I've read...

I've been through a couple sets of the Fralin singles, and they didn't work for me, very harsh sounding to me at the upper register.
There were some great things about the pickups though, clear and big sounding if that makes sense. The treble response was killing me though, I don't like to have my tone knob rolled off either for what that's worth.

I think the Dimarzio ultra's are stacked humbuckers in single coil housings, so I thought they were supposed to be a bit smoother.

My fav single is Jason Lollar, to the point where I'm ok with not trying any others (for the time being at least )...

The Ultra Jazz is a split humbucker, not stacked. The E + A and the D + G string each have their own small pickup.
