Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Prewired Pickups on Essex medium-scale bass?
Several months back, I bought an SX/Essex medium-scale Jazz Bass copy for the purpose of modifying it by replacing the pickups. I put it off for a while because I was satisfied with the sound of the stock pickups, but I am now getting the urge to move forward with the project again.
The main issue, however, is that I don't wanna take desolder the pickups from the volume/tone knob controls (in case I'm not satisfied and I wanna change them back), which brings us to the point of this thread.
I wanna get the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Bass Prewired Pickup Set so that I can just simply slip it in (so to speak) and possibly alternate between it and the stock pickups.
Seeing as how the body of the Essex bass is slightly smaller than its Fender counterpart, would the size of the tone control board be too big for the bass or would it be just fine? I don't wanna spend $179 only to find out that it's too big for my bass.
Can anybody (preferably those who own or have owned both a Fender/Squier Jazz Bass and an Essex medium/short-scale Jazz Bass copy) give me some info, please?
Compare the SX plate to this:
It's smaller than standard size.
if for some bizarre reason you don't like the better pickups you can just snip the last 1/4" off the ends of the pickup wires and put them back in the box looking for all the world like they're still new.
you also have the 30-day option to send them back to dimarzio and they'll send you a different model.
Oh, well. I guess I'll have to go through with learning how to solder. Thanks for the info, guys. I appreciate it.
so how did it turn out?
ever think of replacing the neck pup with some other style? . . . thats a big ole hole!
