dimarzio wiring help please

Sign in to disble this ad
I am trying to get a set of Dimarzio Model J pups working in my Squier vm j fretless

the pups were wired based on the first schematic in this link
http://www.dimarzio.com//media/diagrams/AreaJ.pdf

its for the area j but i thought i read this would work for the model j

the configuration is 500k pots
push/pull/vol push/pull/vol and regular tone
so you should be able to pull each vol and make the pup go parallel
that part seems to work but the bridge volume acts more as a fader
and the neck vol as a master vol

is that what i should expect from that diagram?
also the diagram references a gray wire (5th) but there are only 4 wires coming out of the pup

i would just as soon take out the push/pull pots and put in regular vol pots i have if anyone can point me to a wiring diagram for that

thanks for any help you can offer!

There is nothing wrong with that diagram.
Have you double checked to make sure you didn't miswire the bridge pickup volume pot's output into the neck pickup volume pot's input?

The fifth wire would be the bare shield lead around the four conductors in the sheath.

each pup is wired directly to its corresponding vol pot like in the diagram

must have the bridge pup wired to the its vol pot wrong

do have a diagram for wiring these to regular pots?

As you can see, it's the same thing, just without the series/parallel switches.

The red wires are the hots, (White in the diagram.) the greens are grounds (Black in the diagram.) and you solder the black and white leads together for series wiring, or the white to the red and the black to the green for parallel.

Not a diagram, but it's already in those instructions. You just basically bypass the switch.

WIRING THE PICKUPS
The standard wiring for most humbuckers is series humbucking.
1. Solder the red wire of each pickup to the center leg of its respective volume pot.
2. Solder the green and gray wire of each pickup to the back of its respective volume pot.
3. Solder the black wire and white wire together. Put a piece of tape on this connection so
that it does not touch any other part of the circuit. The wiring is now complete.

thanks a lot lineman6 and mmbongo
that helped clarify things

i put the regular pots in and they sound good

when i went to put the harness back in the bass
i discovered that the regular sized pots don't fit!
that's why they had mini pots in there

an hour with a utility knife and i was able to rout out a little room to fit them in

thanks!
