Dimarzios in a rock setting?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,
Does anyone have an example of this? I'm very interested in the model Js, and they sound like a perfect fit for me - but I've only heard them in a solo setting. Does anyone have them playing along with distorted guitars, or any harder setting?

Is this the passive jpup w adjustable poles? I dont have clips but I can tell you they're pretty sensitive & dark, not a lot of mids. I have it on mine in bridge pos.

It's these guys, but I'd also be kind of interested in hearing Area Js or even Ultra Js in a rock/punk/hardcore/whatever setting!

I have a set of DiMarzio Model J's in my Jazz Bass, and IMO they do Rock very well. IIRC they are actually split coil humcancellers, and IMO they have more of a Fender-P vibe than a Fender J-vibe. IMO They're a lot fatter, punchier and bolder sounding than your typical SC Jazz pickup IMO.

See, that sounds great! While I do love the jazz growl, I don't like my current configuration of "super trebley, just clicks and clacks in the mix"

Have you recorded with that bass?

model j's are totally the right pickup for what you want. got a fender copy i biult from parts that has model pj's in it, and it's really hot and responds amazingly well to distortion.

no idea about area j's, but i don't think the ultrajazz gets it done like the model j. i have one on my 76 pj, and it's a little more "vintage" sounding than the model j.

I use model J's in my '71 Jazz for most of my classic rock gigs. They rock hard. Not the cleanest, clearest sound in the world, but the high end through a hard-working tube amp or sim pedal is memorable indeed. I recommend them. I've no experience with their other models.

My jazz is loaded up with a pair of DiMarzio Ultra Jazz. It's a great rock machine. I've also had a J bass loaded with a pair of DiMarzio Model J's and it was also a fantastic sounding instrument.

If I had to choose between the Model J and the Ultra Jazz, I honestly don't know which I would pick. If memory serves me correctly, the Model J is a bit darker sounding but that could have easily just been the basses or the strings or whatever. I think both would be excellent in just about any rock situation.

When I saw the title of the post: "DiMarzios in a rock setting?" my first thought was "Yes, please."

Man, this sounds great. With most pickups I look at, it's like "well, that's a good sounding feature, but this and this sound bad" - with this, it sounds like it's dark, angry, and responds well to distortion. Doesn't really sound like a jazz pickup, but kicks all kinds of ass.

Yup, sounds perfect to me!

I concur. Model J's are perfect for rock. Wait until you see the magnets on them!!!
