Dirty volume fader on AEB pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently (today) got a Hohner HAB-40N Acoustic/Electric bass used for $100. Gonna put some tapewound strings on it and all the normal set up, but I'm having a problem with the onboard electronics. I get a dirty, or crackly output when I plug it in. It seems to be the volume fader on it cause you can hear it crackle as you adjust it. The overall sound going out sounds like a bad cable or something but it sounds ok if it's near the lowest volume setting. When you turn it up it sounds like a speaker's blown, even if I know it's not. I guess cleaning it would be a good start but do I need to just spray the stuff on the fader slot itself or pull the whole controls out and do it there too? Or, if there are other things to check I would be grateful to know. Thanks in advance!
