Also, for the cost of building one, you could easily get a SansAmp pedal or some such device.

I'm also not saying building something is a not a good or cool idea, I love doing DIY stuff. But, since he's looking for basic, maybe something already made is the simplest of all.

| | | The basic diagram is that of a single opamp running off a single supply. If you want tone controls, you need two opamps with a tone-stack in the middle, or something in the feedback loop. http://liutaiomottola.com/PrevPubs/Preamp/preamps.htm
See that link for a very basic preamp. Use google to find more information. A lot of it is out there to be found, especially on fora like diyaudio, and websites like geofex, tonepad, diystompbox and the like. Also, ready to solder PCB's are available from a couple of websites.
All of this is based on the presumption that you want a new preamp from scratch.
Be a bit more specific next time, tell us about your application, your experience with electronics that sort of stuff. A single sentence will not do.
Best regards,
Jarno.

What is this, the TB brain police? | Brain police? Trev has DIY'd more than his fair share of things. If the OP wants a solid answer, he should start one thread. In the appropriate sub-forum. The response that was given was honest, and appropriate, IMO.
At least the OP wasn't told to do a search
