Do fender Am Std Jazz pups have

Sign in to disble this ad
pole pieces that extend out past the cover? I bought a used pair that I was told are from a 96 american standard. I have no reason to doubt the guy but the american jazz pups I have seen have the poles flush with the covers. These stick out about 1/16 of an inch or so. So do you think they are real fenders?

good to hear. I replaced MIM's and I know what those look like. They are not MIM's. I ahve some 74 jazz pups and those are flush as well and it got me thinkin.

I had a set like that.
The edge of the magnets are not beveled.

yes not beveled. They sound good. I like the flush poles better as I hit the poles when I use a pick or when I play finger style on the bridge pup. Its tearing up my finger a bit. I am glad it sounds like they are real fenders. They came with a control plate and that looked legit with the same cap and a white sticker with initials.

They sound great!
I put these covers on so they wouldn't tear up my fingers.

those look interesting. I heard a guy on hear say he took some sx pups and put a cardboard spacer under the covers to make them flush. Considering that. and yeah they do sound pretty good. Compared to the 74's they have a bit higher output. They are not quite as bright as the 74's. Those things are BRIGHT.

fender american standard (not reissue!) pickups have a layer of plastic between the magnet and the coil wire. it's perfectly safe to tap the polepieces down til they're flush with the cover; in fact, you can push them right out of the pickups entirely!

i routinely tap down the E and G sets of poles on the jazz basses til they're flush, leaving the middle pairs up so the pickup follows the string radius. (for the life of me, i don't know why all jazz bass pickups aren't this way, as the string-to-string balance is far better).

for players who complain of the polepiece edges catching their fingers, it's an easy matter to push the magnets completely out, chuck them in a hand drill, and gently bevel the top edge against a belt sander. (don't let them get hot or you'll kill them.) you just have to be sure to push them back into the pickup right-side up again!

Walter are you saying I can just push down the pole pieces with the pups in the bass? I do not want to break anything. That would solve the problem easy enough

I tried pushing the poles down. On the bridge pup I can push them down a bit but they spring back up. Dont want to push to hard. Anyone else try this?

if it's an american standard and the pickups are the same as they've been for the past 14 years, just put a wooden dowel on the magnets and tap them right on down with a little hammer or mallet. (try my trick of leaving the center 4 magnets alone, i think you'll find you can then get the pickups a little closer to the strings and also have a better string-to-string balance).

do not try this with any vintage-type pickup, as the magnets are right against the coil wire and you could kill the pickup.

I can push the poles on the bridge pup down with my fingernail but they bounce right back up. Neck do not move as easy but bridge is the one I am looking to alter. Thanks for the advice. I wish I was sure they are american standard pups. I know they are not MIM's. Gigged it last night. They sound good so I dont want to mess them up.

you know after re reading this thread maybe the poles are just being pushed back up by the rubber strips under the pup? I got another gig tonight and dont want to mess around too much but maybe I will take a look
