do i need a new bass??

Sign in to disble this ad
So ive been scouring the internet forever, and im down to a few options, but its hard to discern tone through youtube and subjective opinions. im running an mtd kingston heir thru a carvin bx500 w/ 2 nady 18" subs and im still looking for that punchy, raunchy warwick/spector type ballsy tone. so im thinking a pup change from the bartolini-designed passive stock pups (mm/j config) to either EMGs or Bassline QP at neck w/ Nordy MM4.2 at bridge.
besides general opinions, i need to know if a pup change will really be enough. how big of a difference can pups make?? im not looking to change anything else, so will new pups really transform my tone or subtly alter the fundamental sound of my bass. do i need a new bass? (looking at rockbass or spector legends etc..)

...I think you might want to consider a new set of cabs before you start thinking about a new bass. Subs will have difficulty with midrange and treble, which is really where all the balls and raunch can be found.

Try your axe through a decent 4x10 and an amp with a tube pre, and see if that solves your problem. IME, there's really not a lot that an MTD can't do well.

Laevinus is right, new cabs are in order if wanting anything other then just low bass low bass and nothing else.

Yeah, 10's would get you a much more punchy tone.

Doesn't matter what you have, you always need another bass

Agreed, but if the OP is playing through subs, methinks a new rig is of higher priority.
