Do I need new pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I just acquired a used Carvin LB70 with the H50N pickups...and they seem to be picking up a lot of finger noise, including my finger rubbing on the plastic of the pickup itself. One seems to be more sensitive than the other to this finger noise. They seem just a little microphonic. Does this mean the pickups need replacing, or is this just typical of these pickups? I'm not liking all the little finger noises.

thanks,

I believe you can have them rewound, or wax potted or something.

I'd just buy new pickups, provided they are stock sized.

It depends on what kind of pickup you have. Some (probably more) can be re-potted fairly easily, but others will just have to be replaced.
That is, if microphonics is really the problem. Which it sounds like it is.

And of course, pickup repairs can EASILY become more expensive then buying a brand new set.

I have no personal experience with Carvin, but I know my luthier told me the pickups on one of his clients Carvin guitars sounded like ****.

If you can get the pickups rewound or wax potted or something for a low enough cost, do it, but if as M0ses said, it will cost more than a new set, I would just buy the new set, because the pickups are really nothing worth saving.

Thanks for the responses. I read some more after posting about repotting and all that, which I had forgotten about (knew it a long time ago...), so I think I might try that (do it yourselfer), with new pickups as the fallback.

I appreciate the thoughts....

I'd replace them just because I've never really liked Carvin pickups. Keep in mind that they are not standard sized..they use both bridge pickups I think. Measure to make sure.
