Do i really need to have a bridge grounding wire?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all i've just finished building my 1st bass and now that i've come to wire it I find i haven't drilled a hole for the wire that grounds to the bridge. do i really need to ground to the bridge? is there any jazz bass diagram out there that is good to go and omits this necessity? its all painted and i don't really fancy drilling anymore holes (i've had enough diesasters already!)
thanks

Yes, the Bridge MUST be grounded or you will have hum problems. To do this, locate the cavity that is closest to the bridge. Remove the Bridge and whatever covers that part of the cavity (i.e. Bridge pickup or control plate).

Using a small drill bit drill at an angle from under but near the edge of the bridge and down into that cavity. Run the ground wire from the bridge to that cavity then over to the common ground point (usually the back of the case of a volume pot). You just splay the end of the stranded wires out flat to be sandwiched between the body and the underside of the bridge.

FWIW:

I would always drill a ground hole for the bridge ground, even for an active EMG bass that doesn't require one (which is about the only one I'm aware of though there are no doubt others). I'd probably solder the bridge end to shielding as well to place beneath the bridge as pressure from the bridge over time can push the ground down into the wood so that poor contact is made creating poor grounding.

You're there now, why go back and have to take stuff apart.

Once done you can disconnect it and quickly determine it's worth.
