As a general rule, I set the gain on my preamp high enough to dirty things up a bit, and then I roll off my bass volume knob until it cleans back up. That way, if I need some grit I just turn my bass volume up. It may not be ideal for everyone, but it's worked pretty well for me for almost twenty years.

I set the amp's volume to where I think I will need it and use the volume knob for adjustments. I usually have my bass at about 40% volume so if I need more I have plenty.

I kinda use mine as a fade out fade in effect on only over song we have written. But that's the only time. I don't use a volume pedal because I don't see the point in spending money on something I will hardly ever use.

All of my basses are constantly set at maximum output for maximum tone & volume. I hit a volume pedal for swells and on-break muting, etc. I sometimes use the knob in mid-song if I can't get to my amp or if I'm not using a volume pedal, but that's rarely the case. I also find the volume pedal allows me more fine-tuning range than any volume knob does.

In some bands, I like to leave my volume backed off about 10%, so that I have something left when the drummer or guitarist gets enthusiastic...

I play an older 2 humbucker bass with a v-v-t-t and use the volumes and tones to color the tone.

I keep mine at about 90% and turn up my amp to play with a lighter touch. I leave the last 10% for taking a solo or cutting through the mix. I also dial it off in between songs sometimes or after a set.

Absolutely I use it. It can really produce some shifts in tone I feel. And i am constantly messing with my tone on the fly.

Yes. Even more important on multi-pickup basses with a volume per pickup.

I play through tube amps that are very sensitive to finger plucking/picking dynamics and the instrument's raw signal. The tone can change dramatically with slight adjustments of the bass guitar volume knobs, so yes I use the knob very frequently. Also, some of my basses have multiple pickups (different types) and each pickup has its own volume knob. Adjustments are needed for variations in sounds. I don't want everything to sound the same.

Though I use it on my first passive bass in 20 years (CV-P), I tend to use it a lot more on my active basses......I never really thought about why that is the case, though.....
