I've only had experience of the EMG adult version of P bass pickups, but they had a superb sound ( very subjective of course, so,... IMO )

To make them for that price, they must have cut corners somewhere. Thats just business - but hopefullly someone has tried them and can give you a reason why they're that cheap

IMO and IME, they're great for the price. Some people really like them and some people hate them, but tonal preference questions will always have at least two sides. IME, they sound good, are affordable, are available in common configurations and they work. Good enough for me.

The Select series are passive, high-impedance pickups. I've used their bass humbuckers and JJ sets, and they're fine. Nothing to write home about, but not bad at all for the money. The EMG HZ series are better:

EMG HZ Pickups

And then of course, the regular EMG pickups are completely different - they're low impedance with weaker magnets and bigger wire, etc. and the magic is in the preamps built in to the pickups themselves. I love regular EMGs but not everybody does.

I'd probably skip the Selects and move up to the HZ series. They're passive, but much higher quality.
