Electrical BUZZ with Jaco Relic Bass...

I am getting an electrical buzz with my newly aquired Jaco bass...

Crank up the Bridge or Neck pickup all the way in any combination and there is NO noise...

But, the moment I turn up the tone control knob a hugely loud BUZZ is presant!

Anyone have any idea's?

Ive played other Jaco Relic's and it did not do it?!?

Its SOOOO Loud, its not just a little buzz or hum...

The slightest introduction of the tone knob and its overwelmed by buzz...

Welcome to the world of Jazz Basses. All single coil pickups will buzz if there is a noise-inducing electrical object around. The reason that J pickups don't when both are on full (or at the exact same volume) is that they are wired to where they become humbuckers when both are on full. Not to worry.

I don't know the config on the Jaco bass but, typically on a Jazz, if both pickups are cranked, changing the tone control shouldn't change the amount of buzz at all. If it's that loud I'd guess that maybe something's loose on the tone control. Maybe the capacitor since it's quiet when it's off? Take the control plate off and I bet you'll see something loose.

Yup - a well know fact - but to get that "vintage" sound there is no way round it - this is why Roscoe Beck designed a special pickup configuration for his signature bass - to get as close as possible with a way to cancel the hum/buzz!

It is particuarly exacerbated if you play near a TV or Computer Monitor or strip lighting . Avoid these and it's usually bearable!

No, I think we were, actually.

It's a fact that the more treble, the more noise you will hear, but it shouldn't be unbearable. I'm starting to think that he has a wiring problem. Maybe something got knocked loose in transit.

My other jazz bass doesnt do this...

Ok... lets look at this scenario...

When BOTH volume pots are turned ALL THE WAY DOWN, and I turn up the tone control just slightly a LOUD BUZZ is heard...

It doesnt matter where the volume pots are set at... OFF or ON, one on or both on... the noise is there once the tone is turned up the slightest bit...

Since its like that, it makes me think it is not a grounding problem...

I opened up the plate last night, did not find anything loose... ill take a pic and post it up later...

well, I took the bass out to my gig last night... no buzzing at all...

So I guess its just something with the electricity at the rehersal spot...
