EMG 45 6 string shaped suggestions- Gecko Build
I am taking delivery of a Warmoth Gecko 6 in swamp ash with a flamed maple neck.
Bass is routed for EMG 45 pups and I am looking for a passive pup in that shape:
Bass will be run passive while I budget for a preamp (possibly the ACG filter $$).
String spacing is 16.5mm so I am looking for a blade style.
I play soul/funk/R&B and am seeking warmth AND clarity-
Bartolini (too dark?)
Aguilar (in this shape?)
EMG options (passive?)
price/availability is a consideration- looking to get her broken in ASAP!
I think EMG makes 35, 40, and 45 series all in passive as well, but with 'HZ' suffix. Same size as the active ones.
Also, Bart xxM56C B-T (M5 series) are EMG 45 shape.
Thoughts about HZ?
What are your opinions of the HZ series? I find the EMG sound a little to "analytical" in my old age- but also like the ability to get a focused sound that can rolled off...
Taste is subjective and I am obviously all over the place here.
I have them in two very different instruments.
They sound very different from each other, but I'm happy with both.
Nordstrand, although not a blade design, can build their soapbar pups in EMG sizes, and can accommodate most string spacings.
options are great
I spoke (email) with Erno from Q tuner pickups who told me they are making an EMG 45 soapbar for 300/set for 6 strings. That sounds like a great option- not sure about lead time or when they are hitting the market...
My brain is now considering
Aguilar- New ceramic design
EMG- as economic option
It looks the like the "final solution" will be well over $300
EMG HZ's are not bad. I wouldn't run them in a pure passive situation but they probably pair well with many preamps.
