EMG 5 string P-J set question

How do you tell if an EMG "P" pup is for 4 or 5 string basses?

That is an excellent question, usually its by what is written on the bottom of the pickup. What does yours say TJ?

It should say P5 if it was for a 5. http://www.emgpickups.com/content/wi...0230-0107A.pdf

I know EMG is using a stock photo for the webpage which is not helpful.

I'm fairly certain if it's recent it would say p5 on the label on the back of the pickup, much like this photo of the box. EMG uses the same physical shell size for each pickup which makes determining it to be a P5 or P6 a label only thing.

If you have a way of measuring the magnet width, the one in the P5 BEA side is 1.650" while the standard P is 1.2"

Excellent suggestion. But then you have to wire it all up of course (even if bench tested, you need to hear it to diagnosis is).

This is where that piece of plastic with iron filings in it comes in really handy. EMG used to even sell such a thing.

No, it sounds louder right over the magnetic field. Try it! I used to use this technique to double check my wiring when working with some Bartolini triple coil pickups I had in my starfire for a while.

You could approximate this will some iron filings and a piece of paper, but you'd need to be careful or it could get messy.
