It will work with passive pickups.
I recently picked up a very pretty Yamaha 5 string (both of my other basses are old, EMG-active, and, shall we say, "weathered"), and was wondering if there were a way to add the expander circuit that has lived for so many years, in the aforementioned basses. EMG's literature has them in the active-only column, so I called EMG to see if I could put a preamp in front of it, and was told that it wasn't necessary, the current model will work with passive pickups.
Well! $47 including (free) shipping later, and several hours on the bench last night, I'm hooked up! The install involved some very judicious chisel work in the tight control compartment, and the replacement of the barrel jack w/the EMG; this necessitated opening up the jack hole with stepped
holecutter, and a 7/8" Forstner bit.
