EMG HB sized pickup - string spacing problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a schecter stilleto 4 string bass. the EMG site recommends that these HB pickups be used on basses with string spacing less than 2 inches. my bass' string spacing is approximately 2 and 1/8 inches. will this be a problem? i'd be very grateful if you guys would give me your feedback. thanks

It's more likely that your bass is sized for the EMG 35 series pickups.

Are the pickups in your bass exactly 3.5 inches long?

yes i have 3.5'' sized pickups in my bass. they're EMG HZ pickups. the 35 series should be a perfect fit, but someone is practically giving me these HB pickups if they fit and work properly. what do you think?
-thanks

I think you might find your E and G string volumes a bit low if they're off the edges of the pickup's sensing window.

If you're getting the HBs for a steal, you can always sell them here on TB for a profit.

I've been wanting to get a pair of HBs to put in my Steinberger XP-2. The pickups in it now are passive EMG-HBs but I'd love to get a set of the active HBs in there.

No, they're not the "Select" or "Hz" or any other recent EMG passive line. The bass is from somewhere in the mid-80s.. almost as old as I am actually. I've never bothered checking the serial # on the neck to properly date it.

It's one of the Steinberger models with a wooden body and a bolt-on carbon fiber neck. The body shape is slightly more like an arrow than the rectangular bodies of the first all-carbon Steinbergers. Gonzobass has one.

Anyway, the pickups are EMG passives, but this was well before EMG had particular names for its lines of passives (as far as I know).

The sound is good, but I'd like the sharper tone of active EMGs. I think it'd compliment the bright, slightly hollow acoustic tone of the bass.

Take care
