I've long thought that my bass sounds a bit too noisy with a lofi quality to it. The coils can't produce noise unless they aren't grounded. So, I suspected the preamp to be the culprit. I've recently (July '08) had the chance to replace the preamp with the cheapest I could find online, just to prove that the preamp in the bass is just crap. Below are results of a simple recording test. I plugged the bass direct input to my RME Fireface firewire recording interface. These recorded samples use both pickups, with the majority of the tone from the bridge pick up. No post processing done.
