EMG Hz question....and BQC

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought Spector Q5 and I believe it has the EMG Hz's in it. I've read that the Hz are a passive pickup, so why is there still a 9V battery in it? Sorry if this is dumb question.

Also, if I wanted to upgrade to the BQC can I use the system, or just the control?? (I like the idea of blend instead of 2 volumes.)

Passive pick-ups and an active preamp/EQ are the most common combination.

Do the pick-ups say "EMG HZ" on them ?

That swap doesn't sound like such a big deal for anyone who knows what they're doing - I prefer a master vol. and a blend myself.

Remember that any onboard preamp needs a battery to run it, regardless of whether the pickups are active or passive. If you look under the hood in your bass's cavity, you might see a pair of tiny switches wired to the preamp (at least some EMG pre's have this). You can use something appropriately tiny to manipulate them into any of their four combo's (both up, one up/one down, etc.) to adjust the frequency center of your treble control. Wouldn't be surprised if there's some info for this on EMG's site. Check it out...

Yes, they say EMG-HZ. I think it is an active preamp then and passive pickups. Ok, so does the BQC system require Active pickups, or will it work with these passive EMG's? (I know I could just get the control unit no matter what, but I really want a blend instead of 2 volumes)

You need the BQC Control. That one works with passive or active pickups:

The BQC System only works with active pickups.

The preamps are the same, but the volume and blend controls are different values.

Is there a way, is there a way to go to a Volume/Blend combination with these passive pickups with proper values?

Yes, you could do that if you wanted.
