What kind of tone do you like? And was there a specific reason you chose those two options?

bongomania: i play alot of different types of music from pop to jazz to alternative etc....and ive heard emg's were very versatile, aswell as seymour duncans but i want pickups that can give me bright,in your face type notes when i play rock and metal but also can play the warm low end when i play slower, more chill songs....just wanna know what pickups can do that and i chose between those 2 because i did my research on the net and also here in talkbass. i read alot of people saying how good those 2 brands are..... so what do you think?

I'd say get the Duncan 1/4lb for the P position, and either a Duncan stacked J (not 1/4lb) or a Dimarzio Model J in the J position. I'd also say it sounds like you want a preamp with EQ. Pickups alone can change the tone compared to other pickups, but then you're stuck with a somewhat limited range of tones from the new pups. Adding a pre with EQ, especially if it has an active/passive switch, opens up a whole 'nother realm of tone versatility, including (in some cases) more of a hot signal to your amp.

I have a set of j-style 1/4 pounders in my warmoth bass, and they are not very bright pickups. They have a hot output, but they are kind of dark sounding. I can't say about the p pick-up though, as I have never tried it.

I would start with adding a good preamp and then swap out the pups if you still crave a change.
