EMG J Set drop outs

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a relatively new EMG J set in my bass (they were bought new).

I rewired to get the shortest loom possible, but used the original controls and literally replaced a wire at a time until done.

Problem I get is that sometimes when the tone or either pup vol pot is put fully on, either one or both pups cut out.

So I can spin up the tone and sometimes (usually if this is done with a little certainty rather than very gently) the neck pup will cut out completely - queue mad twiddling until 'pop' everything comes back good.

Or I can spin up the neck pickup and sometimes lose everything.

Now is this my wiring (possible although I have checked it out with a multimeter and it seems fine even after everything is quiet) or the pots???

I guess its the wiring since it can affect different pups to the control, and seems to be related to moving the pots maybe? But I cant work out where.

Any suggestions????

Since the issue is when using controls, sounds like an issue with one or more pots to me.

Lightbulb SOLVED!!!

Figured it out!

The pots had worked a little loose (not noticeable when using them).

Over the course of time this has meant successive twists had put some strain on one of the wires between the tone and volume pots. Where the solder had wicked up the wire the strain was greatest (under the insulation), and had caused the wire to slowly give up.

Replaced said wire on the tone pot (and similar issue with a wire on the neck pup pot) and problem solved.

Used slighly longer wires this time and was very careful about how much solder I tinned them with so hopefully this will be OK from now on.
