I ask this because i have used EMG pups in my jazz for 13 years and they make that noise just on certain places. They are noisless 98% of the time but there is always a certain bar or house where the wiring on the electricity makes my bass hum unless i turn the bass around and find the spot where its quiet.
its been like this at both places ive tried it.

The X series seem to be noiseless where my non-X's were not. FWIW.

well hell, how is it that emg's are known as noiseless pickups then?

Every EMG I've ever had - J's, 40P5, 40J, and 40DC - has been dead quiet. Haven't tried an X series yet.

Well.. I'm just saying that in this one particular room where I would have to face a certain angle to not have a slight hum with EMG J-Set, the JX's are completely silent without having to angle my bass a certain way.

I almost wonder if the output impedance of the pickups is the issue, since the X's have 2k ohm output impedance and the J's have 10k ohm. I remember the High-Z mode on my audere was noisy the same room, but using mid or Low-z was noiseless. Perhaps your amp impedance is causing some noise injection with these pickups or something. Just a tiny thought I've been thinking in my head...

thats wierd. been using emg's for 20+ yrs. never had an issue and their always dead silent. you actually hooked them up un mounted to the bass and they were noisy? something very wrong there. they have been 100% reliable for myself and a lot of people. actually never heard of anyone getting a bad set ( not saying you didnt). keep us informed. any additional shielding on that bass? you shouldnt need it with emg's. did you try the ground lift on the amp as well as a different instrument cable?

yup, i took both pickups out of bass and pointing them at the amp made the 60 cycle hum considerably louder. tried everything other than a ground lift as the ground lift on the preamp is only for the di out.
