EMG JVs in a fretless?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, all. I have a set of EMG JV pickups (the Jazz ones with pole pieces) and a EMG 2-band pre just lying unused.

I recently bought a Squier Modified Fretless (the Jaco copy). While it's actually a very good bass, I wonder if the JVs and preamp wouldn't make it even better.

EMG calls the JVs "perfect for fretless". I liked them in my fretted bass, but ultimately swapped them for brighter pickups. (The JVs actually have much lower treble response than their regular J pickups).

Has anyone played these pickups in a fretless, and if so was there also a preamp? What were your impressions?

Try it, you can always switch back to the stock pickups. Let us know how it works out. Maybe even some before and after sound clips.

Well, it's not quite that simple (which is why I asked). I'd have to pay for new pots (I think--not sure EMG requires this), plus having the work done. Also, it's a bit of a hassle for me to get to a tech I trust.

I'm hoping to get at least some input from others before I go ahead.

Bump!

Why do you need new pots? Also, switching pickups is an easy task, you could probably do it yourself if you've ever used a soldering iron/gun.
