EMG Jx: any users?

Sign in to disble this ad
i did a search, but didn't come up with anything meaty. i just ordered a set (ivory) for my thumb bo, sound unheard. if you have used them, what is you take on them, compared to say a passive pup used with a separate pre (barts, dimarzios, etc), and other emg active models? i'm new to emg, and these will be replacing a set of passive ran dimarizo ultra jazz, in conjunction with bridge pizeos through a fishman buffer. i'm looking for a bit more output/tonal evenness between the e/a and the d/g (not happy with the dimarzos in this regard, atm).

Have you checked out EMG TV? They have demos of Bobby Vega using those EMG JX's, the JVX, and the old J set. There is another vid on Bassplayer TV. Those should give you an idea of how those pu's differ in sound.

I made the change to EMG's just a few months ago.
I made a quick sound clip on my Jazz bass with the older model EMG J's (no onboard preamp though): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmpxAneYw5Y Though I've watched those vids, I don't really know how big a difference the old J set has with the new Jx's (which has more headroom, they say). It would be interesting to hear them on the same bass.

If you're coming from a passive set up, the sound difference is night and day. I just changed from passive Fralin single coils to these EMGs. I like both sounds but the EMG's are much more versatile. But then again, since you're using the Dimarzio ultajazz set, you're probably used to a more "hyped" up tone compared to passive single coils.

For me, the only thing that I can tell the difference between the the X Series and their "regular" non X series is the price. I have a set of X Series JAX (Alnico magnets) and many sets of EMG Js (Ceramic magnets), not much difference...

interesting post! I am wondering about LJ's or JX for my Highway I jazzbass. If there's no difference I'll go for the J's
