Barts just don't do it for me. The EMG might be OK, but I have no experience with it.

If I were going to build a 1 pup 4 string I would look at Nordstrand, Delano, or G&L MFD pups. They are all excellent.

Since I love Stingrays, I'd go for a MM-style humbucker wired in parallell. Because of that, I'd buy a Nordstrand MM 4.2, since they seem like a close copy of the MM pickup. I've never tried one out though, so I have no experience.

A Basslines MM Alnico or Ceramic matched with a Bart preamp is a winning combination. I just did this recently and couldn't be happier with the results.

Bart MMC before electronics hooked up (straight to output jack)

Unfortunately i was running a slight "smilie faced" EQ so imagine a bit more mids for the "flat" tone.

How about the triple coil EMG MMTW? gives you an MM and a J pickup in a single pup. I believe in EMGs by the way!!

I like EMG, I have them in my modulus, and I would recommend them if you like that hifi active sound. I would go with the MMTW pickup with a BQC pre. It already has a push pull single/dual coil volume.

You could easily do this with a multitude of pickups and preamps. I boils down to the tone(s) you want. EMG's are IMO on the bright, active, hifi, side of the spectrum.
