I am sort of confused. The pickups have the two volumes and one master tone, but it doesn't seem to really boost either the bass or treb, just sounds like normal tone control. Battery is fine.

Am I forgetting something or hae I just not really used these in twenty years...

Can someone enlighten me?

Sounds right to me. I have EMG PJs in a bass, and that's how mine work.

No Pre

The battery is for the built in pickup pre (within the pickup itself). There's no active preamp per se... So, it is essentially a tone control...

Yup, you just have active pickups and passive tone. You can swap the tone out for a stacked emg active bass/treble preamp. The same battery your using for the pups can also power the active tone circuit. EMG makes one esp for use with their active pups.

A few years ago the guys from EMG sent me a new pot and wiring harness for my Hartke XL-4, because I was having a problem with the J pickup volume pot. Turns out I made a few adjustments, and although I occassionally still have the problem, the volume works fine most of the time. I believe they sent me the stacked pot/knob, like on the Hartke. So, what you are saying, is that I can replace the tone knob with the stacked? Not sure I'm gonna, but just asking.....

Yup, youd replace the single passive tone pot with the stacked bass/treble preamp.
