EMG passives - can I recover them?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought some EMG SEPJ passive pickups off the net second hand (for too much money), and unfortunatly they look really rough/beaten up and dog-eared.

They seem to be sealed at the bottom - can I cut the pickup open and put it into a new cover?

Any other solutions? Don't want to bin them as they cost $80 with shipping to the UK...

Thanks in advance,

James

Never had selects. I've had the HZ's and seems they were epoxy potted like their actives. If those are epoxy potted, forget it (looks like their fused into the cover). It can be done but you have to know what you're doing. If you can see a blatant joint between the cover and the pup base, you might be able to remove them.

Read about guys actually painting their pups but have never seen one. If you did something like that you could sand/file rough edges, use "whatever" filler to smooth it out and hose them down. I would think they would really have to look hammered for it to be an improvement.

You might get hold of some kind of adhesive backed "whatever" and pull off a decent job with it (sort of like copper shielding only not that - unless maybe you like gold front teeth). I think they make stuff like that for pickgaurds actually.

depending on the bass you could make some wood covers for them. it has been coverd in the luthiers corner.

+1

Yah, I have a pair of SEJ's and breaking those guys open looks pretty frightening to me. Mine have a line of epoxy on the bottom, so I suspect yours will as well.

Yeah - think you are right on the epoxy.

Wooden covers wouldn't fit the bass (Jackson Concert).

Ironic thing was that I bought the pickups without having much experience with other pickups/basses.

I've just bought an SX Jazz, and that has REALLY bad sounding pickups. The Jackson pickups are actually quite good

Cheers guys,

James
