Question EMG phasing? help needed!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all

Just installed a pair of EMG35DC pickups in one of the basses and everything seems to work except there appears to be what could be a phasing issue.

We used #4 diagram on this sheet: (neck vol, bridge vol, passive tone)

http://www.emginc.com/content/wiring...0230-0127A.pdf

Our wiring exactly mimicks that of the diagram. When the neck volume is rolled up, the overall output seems to slightly decrease, most noticable on the low B (BEAD tuning). I would assume that if anything, the instrument would be slightly louder when a second pickup is introduced? Does anyone know what might be happening here?

Thanks,
Aharon

that's straight-up jazz bass wiring, which puts the pickups in parallel when they're both on.

a slight volume drop is normal.

ah right. well I chose that wiring configuration because I really wanted seperate volume for the bridge and neck pickup.

why does this volume decrease occur?

can anyone reccommend a high-output configuration that allows seperate volume for the neck and bridge pickups?

Not doable with EMGs, but series wiring instead of parallel will basically "add" the pickups' outputs together, rather than "dividing" the output between them. It also greatly increases the lows and mids, sometimes to the point of mud.

What you've got now is really the right way to do it. Your loudest setting will typically be the neck by itself. You can always add a preamp if you want more overall output from the bass.
