EMG pickup question...

Sign in to disble this ad
How can you tell if emg pups are the good ones, or the "selects"? Do they say selects on the pickup? I've got a pair of P bass pups that say EMG on them in the corner, & do not say "select" anywhere. There is also a small white sticker on the back of them that syas "HID". Any help is appreciated...

The Selects will say so on the pickup, and also says "designed by EMG" in smaller print. They are also passive (no battery). Standard active EMG's simply say "EMG." The older ones (without the detachable wire connector) have an additional single red wire battery wire (+) coming out of them.

The white sticker on the back is merely a coded indication of the date of manufacture to identify the production run.

Active EMGs are fantastic pickups. I don't understand why they don't seem to be as popular on here as some of the more traditional sounding pickups - maybe us bassists are basically a conservative bunch.

Yes. The active EMG P pickups sound great and not at all too bright as some complain. I've put them in a Mexican P bass and an Ibanez P clone.
I was quite pleased with the result.

I agree with both of you. I just ordered a Valenti J5 and had the EMG J's put in there since I love them so much in a 4 string bass I owned. Any kind if brightness can obviously be EQ'ed out either by an onboard preamp or on your head. I can get a growly fingerstyle tone, a fantastic one at that, or a nice hot aggressive slap tone with them and not have to touch any of my knobs. Very well designed IMO.

I've had a set of active emg's in an old kramer striker bass for like 20 years; they have always sounded great to me. This is going to be a cool project! Matt

I've got an EMG P set on the way, I can't wait! I dig the modern edge that they give to the Precision sound.

Because they sound like EMG no matter the bass?

Funny, my bass still sounds like me even if it has EMG's. I've had one in my P-bass for 10+ years and I like it: quiet, reliable and records well.

Here's the project; my buddy sold me this for $20. It's a J.B. Player "professional series" p bass, that someone defretted, filled in the fretboard w/ filler & sanded down. I'm looking for a neck for it right now.

Your bass sounds like EMG, your playing sounds like your playing.

You should listen to my graphite neck, fretless Jazz strung with pressurewounds and my MIM fretted Jazz strung with flats. They sound distinctly different despite the fact that they both have EMG pickups. Amazing, eh?
