EQ preamp volume pot value?

I have an 18V 3-band onboard pre with a 20K volume pot. I want to add an active/passive push/pull 250K pot. What will happen to my outgoing signal strength when in active mode? (I have a follow-up question, depending on what the answer is to this one.)
