Esh bass owners, I need your help

I know that before, while using passive pickups, Esh basses used to have a 4-position switch with series/bridge pickup + passive mid boost/parallel/"clean" bridge pickup. I have only read about it, but would like to do something similar on my passive bass. Here are my questions:

1) How is the passive mid boost achieved ?

2) How big is the difference between bridge + passive mid boost and "clean" bridge? Is it negligible or like a few db boost on eq (how many db ?). Is bridge + mid boost like having a "hotter" pickup ?
