Essex Mod Specs

Sign in to disble this ad
Lots of this dialog is scattered across other threads.
I thought I'd start a thread specifically for citing specs
related to Essex mods, so that we can make it easier for each other.

I tried this question in another thread, and it got passed over, so
we'll try it here:

Many people express interest in changing pickguards.

Could someone with an SX SJB 57, SJB 62, or SJB 75
please cite the measured distance from the top left hole to the top right hole of the pickguard? I want to see just how far
this Rondo replacement pickguard
http://www.rondomusic.com/sjbpickguardblack.html
is for my LTD Jazz bass. Thanks.

It measures 9-7/16" center to center. I've also got a tracing if you want an image. I can make it so you can print it out and it'd retain its exact size (hopefully).

Thanks so much for taking the time to do that. I appreciate it.

Now I need to do the same measurement with my SX LTD Jazz.

[which, these days, is difficult: I'm immobilized due to breaking my leg in 3 places on Friday. Had operation on Saturday. Now intimate friends with Mr. Perc O'Set.]

Bummer. The short scale pickguards are only about 6 1/2".

You are right. I made a mistake and typed in 9-7/16th"

Thanks for the clarification. Since the dimensions are now
in the neighborhood, I ordered the Rondo SX J replacement
pickguard in black. I'll post back here after trying to put it on.

Well, I can now confirm that the black J replacement pickguard from Rondo does Not fit the LTD J.

I just received it after ordering, and, nope, not even close.

If anyone wants to buy a new, still with plastic cellophane protector black Rondo replacement J pickguard, PM me.

What about the PG doesn't fit your LTD? Is it the screw holes or neck pocket? It's common to have to file the neck butt areas but the screw holes being off indicates total lack of QC at the factory.

I always thought that the LTDs are the same as other except that they're upgraded with different bridges and tuners. Surely they can't be different bodies, or are they?

My LTD is a Short Scale, and that's where the differences are coming from.

While the top most screw to screw distance is nearly identical, everything else is messed up. It's beyond a little filing.
In particular, the pickup location is totally off.

I now have a 10 dollar drink coaster.

I have an SX p-Bass/maple neck with the "nuclear orange" color. I want to sand the back and san the headstock so I can put a new logo on it. What is the best route for this and what finish should I use?

No joke - the best route might be - buy a Rondo replacement neck with no nuclear orange and no headstock logo. [I hate the orange, too.]
