Ever placed a MM in a P sweet spot???

Sign in to disble this ad
Was planning on going with a MM/P (with MM in bridge position and P in neck position) on a current project but the guy routing the body read my note wrong and routed the MM in the typical P position. So, on to plan 'B". Anyone here ever tried a MM as a solo pickup in a P postion? or has anyone ever tried a MM in P position and slipped a J or P up near the neck?

Yup. Awesome. DEEEP tone, but plenty of character / grind if you want it....I prefer it to stock MM placement for humbuckers.

Yeah- the MFD pickup in the G&L L-1000 is similar in shape to an MM pickup and is in the P position, but most MM pickups are much lower/ thinner output without a preamp than an MFD. What kind of pickups are you using?
In the L1000, it is absolutely killer sounding. These basses also have a parallel/singlecoil/"single coil with bass boost" switch that allows you to completely change the character of the sound from a 1 pickup bass.

in my fretted basses I have a SMB-5A (SD/Basslines MM-type pup) wired in series in the Pbass position and a SMB-5A wired in parellel in the MM position. Works for me . . .

IIRC, the Warwick $$ is "close" to what I use (but with more options, maybe)

I had planned on using a Delano brand MM style pickup (5 string). Loved the sound of it in a traditional stingray location. I did a lot of experimenting with pickup locations and combinations on a SUB bass body and custom electronics to work out the sound I was after, but I never tried just a single MM in the P slot. You guys seem to think the single MM sounds sweet in the p location so maybe I'll bring out the old sub SUB and hack it up some more just to see what it does. I have room up very near the neck heel to install a jazz or P pickup, do you think adding the neck pickup just turns the sound to mud (never played a gibson EB series but I think they have a pickup very near the neck).

I neglected to say that although I DID test the pups solo'd, I ALWAYS use both pups together. The series output and parallel output join together at the volume pot . . . with NO switching OR tone pot(s) . . .
