Experience with hum canceling 5 string jazz pickups

I purchased a set of Nordstrand hum canceling 5 string pickups for a fender USA Jazz a while back, and could never get them to completely cancel the noise, so I ended up going with some single coil pickups (which cancel the noise completely when both are engaged). Now I am thinking of going with hum canceling pickups again, and I am wondering if I just wired mine up wrong in the first place (they still were much quieter than single coils, but they always had a little hum), or if there is no truly quiet 5 string jazz pickup.

For those of you with the hum canceling 5 string pickups, are they working fine for you? Are you just listening through your amp, or do you do any recording with them, where you can more clearly hear any extra noise?
