External pickups

I have looked all over and the only ones I can find are those proprietary roland "midi" pickups, that don't act like a normal pickup would. I'm trying to run 2 fx chains with which I want to outputs (I know a splitter could do this but really I'm doing something more complicated) I know I could make my own, but I would rather not pay someone tons of money to router my bass, and I'd rather not mess it up myself.

I need a pickup (ANY pickup. a guitar pickup would work) but for it to work without routering it needs to be like 1/4" tall so it will slide under the strings. After that I could easily put a couple extrnal pots and another input. It won't look pretty but I don't care.

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

Hi.

On another thread I suggested the OP with similar needs to contact those guys that make the alumitone pickups. Those pickups (proximity sensors actually ) are thin, and without the bended "ears" for normal mounting should do the trick.

Half inch thick, but these might do the trick: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...Humbucker.html

Routing really isn't that hard. It's a useful skill to have.

1/2" is a bit too much. I also have to take into consideration the pickups can't be too close to the strings. I know routing isn't the hardest thing to do, but it would require far too much work including taking out the pickups so I don't run the router into them, getting them to the exact depth needed, and I don't have a router.

Those alumitone pickups looked very promising, but I wish I could know how thick they are. They look pretty thin but I need to know the exact heigh before purchasing. Thank you to both of you for your suggestions.

I actually did what you were doing... but I mounted them OVER the strings so I could find the ideal position on the string for the pickups. I built a mounting bracket out of pine and attached it to the bass with double sided tape.

This could work for you as well, and you'd be able to use standard pickups. Sure, it's goofy looking, but it could work.

Wow, that's actually a really good idea. I never thought of that. I will use that as my last resort if I can't find a pickup thin enough. I contacted a couple custom pickup shops, but it'll prolly be a while before I get a reply.

Hi.

^ ^works well, but as said, may look a bit goofy . Easiest solution to try out Your ideas though IMHO.

Obviously You have already considered the piezo bridge, or individual piezo saddles. Those are the cleanest looking solution I think, but the signal shape may or may not be what You're after.

I have a question that might help us come up with recommendations for you: Besides "more complicated", what is it that you're looking for from an additional pickup that you can't get with a signal splitter?

Well actually I would rather not say because I want to do it first. I mean I know I sound like an ******* saying that, I'm sorry. But I just had a neat idea and wanted to try it out. If it works I'll tell you.

I think it's actually been done before but I've never heard it applied.
