Extra jazz plate hole. What to use it for?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a second hand warmoth jazz body which has a side input jack. I have a 4 hole control plate right now that will be wired to VVT passive.

What should I use that extra hole for? Any thoughts?

I was going to do an active/passive toggle as well as an active/passive switch, but I'd rather not put either of those in the extra hole... any thoughts?

Good call... I wonder if a concentric pot exists that is just a switch that would allow me to switch on active/passive and series/parallel.

I'm confused. You can't do active/passive on a passive bass.

I agree with the dummy pot idea, you could just keep fiddling with it at random points during shows, and if anybody asks, you could just say "it helps keep me from ripping open the space/time continuum with my awesomeness" or something like that. I dunno, it gives you a chance to mess with people.

Sorry, I'm not being clear here. I'm getting a Bartolini TC3 Boost preamp that I'm putting into the bass. However, it just goes in between the output wire and jack. So, it's really just a boost and not a tone shaping device.

Just get a three hole plate.

Otherwise, series/parallel, tone cap selection, killswitch, etc.

How about a V/T for each pickup?

Useless. Multiple tone controls interact.

You could put an additional output jack there, wired such that it bypasses the Bart thingy.

That's what I keep reading!

Maybe what I really need is a rotary, concentric, dpdt switch.

You could install this knob. What you do, is if you need that extra push over the cliff...

The problem with that is that the preamp's input impedance will run parallel to the passive output's signal when you use the output. You don't want that extra load on your signal. It's best to use an active/passive switch.

Alexplorer's Axe Hacks: Rotary Switching Possbilities.

4 Position Rotary Switch | Allparts.com

google "rotary switch guitar"

Or use a pot with a push-pull dpdt swich, only use the switch and still have a dummy pot...

Dummy pot sounds like fun...

Tell everyone that it is an onboard version of the BOA!

I'm thinking that maybe I'm better off getting a three spot jack control plate and drilling it for an active/passive switch and a parallel/series switch.

I assume with that bartblaster thingy you'll have a battery, if so how about one of these for the extra hole:
9 Volt Low Battery Indicator for Active Pickups & Electronics For Guitar & Bass
Otherwise, go with the spinaltap volume pot that goes to 11 as noted above. Spinal Tap - 11 - YouTube
