Fat sound out of MM style pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a cheapy laguna bass 4 stringer in my collection, which actually plays really nice neck is one of the best Ive played, however I really like fat sounds so im looking to replace the stock MM pickup. Any advice on getting a MM pickup that produces a fat sound? I dont care for bright at all. I will probably even end up with Flats on this bass. its passive right now, and im still debating on keeping it passive or throwing a pre on it, cause im also considering a rack pre in my setup anyways, so any advice will be helpful.

I put a Nordsrand mm5.2 into my OLP MM 5-string. I love it, and they're all passive.

If the pickup has four conductors (leads) coming out of it, you can try rewiring it in series, instead of the usual parallel wiring, that should give you a boost in low mids and an overall fatter tone.

Applause for Kent Armstrong pickups!

You can wire the Kent Armstrong MM Parallel/single coil/series.
