Fat Stacks progress report

Sign in to disble this ad
A short while ago I put Nordstrand Fat Stacks in my Lakland 55-01. I set it up all passive and I use it with Sadowsky preamp/di pedal. My first impressions were that I liked them in single coil mode but I didn't like the stacked mode much, and I was seriously considering replacing them with Big Singles instead.

A little bit playing and a rehearsal made me change my mind because I find a real good setup. Bridge pickup full in stacked mode, neck pickup about %70-80 in single coil mode, tone rolled off halfway, a little bit of bass and treble boost in Sadowsky preamp! It's thick, it cuts and it shakes the house!

I definitely recommend FS owners to put a switch for each pickup to change between stacked and single mode and experiment.

The Fat Stacks in single coil mode are my favourite configuration too. In stacked mode they sound darker, smoother, fatter, which is great for some styles, but less growly and punchy.

I have the Big Singles too and I actually prefer the Fat Stacks in single coil mode.

I am 90% sure I am going to buy a passive Nordstrand Nordy VJ5, and I want to have it wired exactly has you did your Lakland, that is which each pickup on a push / pull volume knob that switches each pickup from single coil to stacked.

Before I do that, I was hoping you could give us another progress report. Now that a month or so has gone by, do you have anything else to say about this arrangement?

Cheers,
Tom

Not really. Every now and then I favor neck pickup just to get that old school sound, or sometimes (not always) ponder about putting in a Sadowsky or Aguilar OBP-1 in it so that I can control bass boost on the fly, instead of kneeling down to do that with Sadowsky floor preamp but that's about it.

The only "problem" with Fat Stacks is the sudden volume increase switching from stacked to single-coil and I prefer controlling the volume not with volume knob but with bass knob on Sadowsky pre.
