Fender 75 RI Jazz Pickups

First, let me say I love the bass I'm talking about.

Second let me explain the bass.

I scored a nice Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz bass from a fellow TBer....what makes this different than stock one are two things.

It has a Squier Classic 60's Precision Neck....which is cool because I have one of those also, so I have a P and a J with the same neck, a neck I find very comfortable and this makes switching between the two....my only 2 basses right now....a joy.

It came with 75 RI Jazz pickups.....cool sounding bass, but these pickups just seem different from....well for example the Geddy Lee Jazz I had last year. They seem to be less hot, less agressive and more nasaly, but not bad by any stretch though.

I changed to CTS pots and a Switchcraft jack, all completely reharnessed by my tech.

I know its a very different bass than the Geddy, but I find myself contemplating a change. I love the results I got from putting a Duncan Antiquity II in the P-Bass and am considering the Antiquity II set for the Jazz since I noticed the price has come way down for a set than years ago.

The Geddy had great tone.....I do understand I'm comparing a MIJ. Alder body and maple board to a MIC, Basswood body and Rosewood board....but the Squier is a great bass and the unplugged tone is good.

I would love to hear head to head comparisons between the bass these came out of, 75 RI vs Geddy Lee

Thoughts please

Odd, I just did a search and found more than few posts where the 75RI is described as more aggressive sounding then the Geddy.

I had some Geddy Lee pickups and thought they were pretty good.

Then got a Custom Shop J neck pickup and liked that even more.

Then got a set of used ANT II's off ebay and sold the rest.

IME, I think you'll like numbers in the 7.5K - 8K range. Darker/warmer, less nasally than stuff around 7+K.

A .1uF cap might do the trick as well.

Thank You

I'm going to give it awhile.....I might go for the Antiquitys later on.

I put an Orange drop .47 in btw.

You know I always thought I was a P-bass guy and had bad luck with Jazz basses in the past...but after owning the Geddy and now this bass.... I think I'm in the Jazz camp now.

I was always thinking about when the day comes to get a really nice Custom Shop Fender, a Lakland or Sadowsky that it would be a P, but now I think a really nice J is in my future.

Did you mean .047? I hope so.

A series/parallel switch will beef up the tone a lot.

Your pickups are already in parallel. In series both pickups are connected to each other, leaving two leads going to the controls. It makes them into a HB which gives more output and makes the tone bassier.

If you have any more caps you can temporarily alligator clip the leads from one to the leads of your new cap (no need to unsolder anything). The values add when you do that, so adding another .047 will give you .094 which will cut considerably more treble than a .047.
