Getting A Bartolini TCT installed.
Just recently bought a Bartolini TCT to put in my Marcus Miller Fender 4. It still hasn't come yet but Im trying to find someone to install it. I live in the Philadelphia area and would like to know any good techs in the area.
I called Norio Imai at Imai Guitars in NY and he said it would cost $300 just to install it. I couldnt believe that extravagant price BUT he has worked on Marcus' bass personally and has installed the same preamp on his backup basses that he tours with. But $300 seems like alot.
I dont know what the going rate is for this type of work so any advice from yall would be appreciated....
If you want to avoid shipping a bass, and if you're cool with just sending the loaded body to a good tech to get this preamp installed, then there are a number of places you can send it. Over the years, I've send only loaded bodies for preamp installs to Kevin Kaufman of Kaufman/Daenzer in Florida (Jaco's old tech), Carl Pedigo of Chicago Bass Doctor (Lakland tech), as well as John Brown of BGF in Minneapolis. They're all excellent and were all charging below three bills, IIRC. When asking for a quote, mention that the Marcus bass requires no woodwork to fit a battery and preamp, as it is already routed to accept these components as it comes from the factory.
Norio Imai has Sadowsky pedigree and is in NYC. His work, although worth the scratch, will always be priced at a high premium. I also had a ton if work done at Sadowsky back in the day but they don't accept outside repairs anymore.
In Philly, Tim at Callowhill may be able to do the job as well. I think he's more of a builder now, but he did run a great repair facility and may still be doing that sort of work on occasion.
