It could be the strings but since you say that it is an Audere pre, you may have to go inside and adjust the little modules(with a very small screwdriver) to get the proper balance between the mids and bass that you feel you are missing.

This happens typically when the string heights are a bit high. The fingered volume greatly exceed the slap volume acoustically, so be it electronically. It could also be the strings. As my inital "gut" to the thread title was " any J with nickle rounds set low, real low!"

There may be more to it than that, as I am no more than a closet amature.

Hope y'all have been well!

Hmmm.....just seeing this. May have to try that. The pre is only a 2 band. Is there still an adjustment for mids?

At least on my bass. When slap hard I hear the first hit hard but the string doesn´t ring so well. If I slap softer it rings out louder. So when slapping I try to relax myself...

I don´t use compression.

Sadowsky preamp and pickups! Solves the problem and you won't be sorry!

It may not be but the little module for bass will be a big help in balancing out the problem you described. If you didn't know, the bass response on the Audere can be adjusted down to 2 hertz.
