Good pickup to go with MM pickup
I plan on adding a pickup to a MM copy bass that I am putting together. For now its staying passive, although it could change in the future. I know usually a jazz pickup is added to a MM pickup, but I am wondering are there other style pickups that could work well with it?
I loves me some coil tapping. Another MM pickup in the neck position with coil tapping would be the way I'd go.
Some have used P/MMs to great effect. However, because of the differences in impedance, the Precision and the MM may not play well if both are selected at the same time.
I use a P on the neck and an MM on the bridge on one of my basses, works well.
Has anyone tried a mudbucker with a MM pickup?
Mudbucker are very high impedance pickup, even more than a P. The impedance mismatch will be worse.
There are solutions:
-buy a matched P/MM set, like Delano's, for example
-add a series resistor with the MM to increase resistance, to match the higher impedance pickup
-wire the 2 coils of the MM in series to have a higher impedance (sum of the 2 coils). Standard MM wiring is parallel (Very low impedance)
-add an active buffer in front of each pickup to have the impedance match
- or just accept that the 50/50 sound is not at the middle position of the blend pot
Without question a P bass pup. MM in the sweet spot near the bridge and P in sweet spot at the neckish position.
I'm offering that with my new company, Lower Groove Guitars as an option on all basses among some other interesting options.
Best of two different worlds and together the sound is huge.
In my opinion better than two MM's together.
