I'm offended by those easily offended.

But if it originally had a 3-band eq, and now has a 2-band eq, then it was probably not modified by gypsies. Wait - what was the question? |

As to what the world was like before people took offense at terms like this, it was fine for those who used the terms but pretty lousy if you were in the group that was constantly the butt of derogatory names like this. There is absolutely no defense for using terms like this in public.
It's usually only ignorance and not malice that is behind these kinds of names, but some people don't want to believe people when they hear that it hurts to be called these things, and that is pretty weird if you ask me.
Believe me, hearing someone say they jewed someone down makes me angry, and makes me think about some of the things I say that might cause offense to others. Why not learn from threads like this instead of defending something that obviously is a real problem for others? |

We assign their meaning for ourselves, and usually come to social agreements to share that meaning. Often, words and phrases have multiple meanings. If someone is unaware of the origin of the term "gypped," and simply takes it for its denotative definition, there is no harm and no foul. For those who recognize that there are many ways to interpret the term, it would be wise to evaluate the communicator's intent based on context. "Gypped" is not a stereotype of gypsies unless you make that connection and interpret that meaning. It's all in your perception, not the term itself. |

It's like saying you are going to "jew" someone down on their price instead of saying barter or haggle. That's not nice either. A lot of these phrases came from a time when it was OK to use racial slurs. Like saying "get your cotton picking hands off me". While most people don't associate these as racial slurs anymore, it's best to just use a different word.

Societies change, but language often takes a long time to catch up. People use certain phrases without knowing or thinking about their origins all the time, but don't necessarily mean to offend. |

So the best you can do is educate people to the meanings, since most people just repeat certain phrases without even thinking about it. We all grew up saying certain things without even knowing why and where they came from.
So that's what we were doing here.

I'll make fun of whom ever I choose.
If you like you can make all the Lithuania jokes you want. Or say anything about the Norwegian, and it wont make any difference.
For that matter, you can say anything you want about my nationality.
Why ? Because it's a joke on an internet forum. And it doesn't really matter.
Get a life and grow some skin you sad, sad people.

Get a life and grow some skin you sad, sad people. | While in the Army our required racial sensitivity training consisted of telling racial jokes. Obviously not the Army approved training, but things often change when they hit the local level. The best part was when our 6' 6", 300 lbs (absolutely no fat) black drill sergeant called the 100 lbs white guy up on the stage. (Fortunately I was the second smallest.) He told him, "Tell me a n---- joke, now Private and make me laugh!!" Talk about a look of despair and fear. Thank God I weighed ten pounds more than him!!! Basic training was a lot of fun. |
