Have used Model Js exclusively. Need to try something new. Suggestions?
I have used Model Js in my Stambaugh and in previous basses for at least 8 years. I still dig them but I want to try a different direction.
I am looking for suggestions for J pups that would have a more even/controlled low-end and more high mids (but without sounding harsh). These would be going in my Stambaugh which is quite warm sounding with its mahogany body/rosewood top so I want to balance things out a bit.
I was thinking of the Nordy NJ4s but have read that they have a huge low-end which is kinda not really what I think I want. However, I have used the NP4s in the past and did really like their upper mid character.
It would be great if they were not too noisey too. Perhaps humbuckers or noiseless? I plan to wire them as one pickup (V/T... not V/V/T).
if you're going to wire them always both on, then there's no reason at all to get noiseless pickups and a few reasons not to; a good vintage J set will hum-cancel perfectly and give you just what you're talking about, less rumble and more clarity and balance.
any number of makers to choose from; fender "original" or "custom shop '60s", and duncan vintage or antiquities are all great for "music store" pickups, and i like fralins for the top shelf stuff.
